Game as performance has existed as a cultural phenomenon for thousands of years. It reappeared in contemporary dance art in the 1960s in the US, in the works of Anna Halprin, Simone Forti, Yvonne Rainer, Steve Paxton and others. Each game has rules of its own, which plunge the dancers into a chain of unexpected events as they confront one another. Reactions, courses and combinations of movement are exposed and discovered, a surprise for the viewer and dancer alike.
